Bloat

Bloat, also referred to as a gastric torsion, is a life-threatening emergency more commonly affecting large, deep-chested breeds like Great Danes, Collies, Dobermans or German Shepherds in dogs ages seven to ten.

Bloat is a acute swelling of the stomach caused by the stomach rapidly filling with excessive gas.  The stomach may coil on its axis causing obstructions at either end so that both the esophagus and intestines can become twisted shut.

Eating or drinking too fast can contribute to the problem along with excessive exercise before a meal can be digested.

Treatment includes passing a stomach tube or surgery.  See a veterinarian immediately.
